Global total precipitable water trends from reanalysis datasets during 1958-2021
This study investigates the trend in global total precipitable water (TPW), surface skin temperature (Ts), and surface air temperature (T2m) from 1958 to 2021 using ERA5 and JRA-55 reanalysis datasets. We found statistically significant moistening trends over North America, tropical land, and Northe...

We found statistically significant moistening trends over North America, tropical land, and Northern Hemisphere polar regions; and negative trends in the South Pacific Ocean. Global TPW increased at 0.66 and 0.88 % dec-1 for ERA5 and JRA-55, respectively. Except for cooling in certain areas of the Southern Hemisphere and the North Atlantic Ocean, significant T2m and Ts warming trends are noted across the globe at the rate of 0.14-0.16 K dec-1, resulting in about 4-6% K-1 of water vapor response to temperature. In addition, land experienced larger warming than oceans with a ratio of roughly 2:1. In view of global dTPW/dT in the banded-latitudes, two stronger response zones were in the southern high-latitudes and tropical zones, and the dTPW/dT ratios over land were mostly lower than the theoretical ratio of ~7% K-1 in tropical zones. Compared to the Radiosounding HARMonization dataset, TPW shows better agreement in North America and NH polar while temperature shows better agreement in Europe. Moistening in tropical oceans during 2003-2021 is consistent with observations from Atmospheric Infrared Sounder and Special Sensor Microwave and Sounder record satellites.
