Electricity and fuel costs may take a large share of family income and may strain community or regional budgets. There are still many Arctic communities that that rely almost exclusively on fossil fuels for electricity, heating and transportation. These fuels may come from local sources or may be shipped in by land, sea, or air – and those transportation methods bring still more challenges and costs.
