Description
Summary:"On the request of the Arctic Council, a Contact Group composed of representatives from the AC member states and Permanent Participants’ organizations, as well as relevant internatio- nal scientific organizations, has been carrying out a scoping study on mechanisms to maxi- mize the legacy of the International Polar Year (IPY). A workshop on these issues was held at the Arctic Science Summit Week (ASSW) in Bergen on March 27, 2009. The Arctic Council supports international coordination to maximize the legacy of the Interna- tional Polar Year (IPY) within the following areas: - Observations, data access and management, - Access to study areas and research infrastructure, - Education, recruitment and coordinated funding, - Outreach, communication and assessment for societal benefit. Sustained action on these four areas, in collaboration with relevant partners and with a de- cadal-scale view, will amplify the achievements of IPY and enhance the role of Arctic research in informing societal decisions at this critical time for the Arctic, its peoples, and indeed the global population that is affected by Arctic change." /./
