At the beginning of the Meiji era, king scallop was mostly fished in Hokkaido, in the bay of Funka and on the south-west coast of this island. Around year 25 of the Meiji era (1893), it spread to the coasts of the Okhotsk Sea. This exploitation provided a production which varied considerably from one year to the other, but was a central element of the activity and economy of fishing villages. La coquille Saint-Jacques, Patinopecten yessoensis (JAY), est l'une des espèces d'eau froide dont l'exploitation dans les eaux japonaises est la plus ancienne. Dans la baie de Mutsu, la pêche s'est intensifiée au milieu de l'ère des Tokugawa (1615-1868) et le muscle des coquilles tenait une place importante dans le commerce avec la Chine. Au début de l'ère de Meiji, la pêche se faisait surtout en Hokkaido, dans la baie de Funka et sur la côte Sud-Ouest de cette île. Aux alentours de l'an Meiji 25 (1893), elle s'étendait aux côtes de la Mer d'Okhotsk. Cette exploitation a assuré une production variant considérablement d'une année sur l'autre, mais qui n'en était pas moins un élément essentiel de l'activité et de l'économie des villages de pêche.
