First, in a broad introduction, a short history is given on albacore fishing in the bay of Biscay from its origin until its present extension in the neighbourhood of the Acores. This is followed by a history of the research beginning with the first attempts at classifying the albacore and then with the first investigations done on research ships; then the authors explain the reasons and the evolution of their work with reference to what was already known. The 2nd part of the study describes the campaigns of research from 1967 to 1972 to study the albacore in the north east Atlantic and the fishing and prospecting techniques used during these campaigns. The 3rd part of this investigation shows the research works sensu stricto. The methods and techniques of work used, on the high seas as well as in the laboratory, are well detailed. The main prey of the albacore are described and the study of digestion during a 24 hr cycle indicated the daily and alimentary rhythms of the longfin white tuna. To this first work, is added the study of pH and of parasitism of the stomach contents together with a first estimate of the evolution of the hardness of the flesh of the longfin white tuna. In a 4th part the authors describe population studies and migrations of the the world 'populations', they describe the different rates of parasitism by H.fusca, the results of tagging, the study of the model classes, the regulation of the inner temp and the differences of colour to show the heterogeneousness of the albacore stock in the north east Atlantic during the summer time.
