As representatives of the mining industry they wanted to create a platform for industry, Yukon College, First Nations, and governments to work collaboratively in in addressing environmental challenges faced by the mining industry in Yukon and determining effective mechanisms for sustainable, environmentally-safe mining practices. YMRC wanted to increase the knowledge, skills and abilities of Yukoners in environmental research and practice, and have First Nations and local communities affected by the mining industry become knowledgeable and engaged in environmental research. Through an active partnership, the YMRC mandated Yukon College (Dr. Janin) to conduct research at Yukon College to collaborate in the development of the northern mining industry. The Yukon College received CanNor funding in order to complete research activities that will reduce the environmental risks and costs associated with mining in the North.
