In the late 50's and thru to the 60's and 70's, there was a military initiated program to teach Arctic Survival. (who knows? it may still be in existence). It was a very genuine program to teach the art of survival in the rigors of the frozen tundra. Participants were assembled at RB and transported to a site about three miles north of the station. This was in winter conditions, usually after the end of the polar night which ends about Feb 6 at RB. So at least there was some daylight for these 'arctic heroes' and as I remember the program continued into late April. The picture identifies the HQ's, fondly named as 'Crystal City'. But this establishment housed only the guys in charge.you will note that the photo shows many attempts to build igloos which is where the 'survivors-in training' lived. They were taught to build an igloo by one of the local Inuit. Still Image Arctic inuit polar night Tundra Arca (BC's Digital Treasures) Arctic |
