The information was synthesised and the information collected to describe rocky reef location on the Australian Continental shelf is described by 4 tiers. Tier 1 are high resolution multibeam ‘local surveys’ generally carried out by the State stakeholders, Tier 2 are ‘regional surveys’ generally collected by CSIRO’s National Marine Facility. Tier 3 are national scale surveys from the Australian Hydrographic Service and Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. Tier 4 is a ‘reef probability’ information source isolated from the Australian Hydrographic Service's (AHS) deep features S57 layer. Rocky reefs form an important habitat on the continental shelf and one subject to disproportionate fishing pressure given the high productivity of this habitat relative to adjacent sandy seabed. Despite this, little is known of the extent and nature of these systems beyond their value to the fishing industry.
