Maintenance and Update Frequency: notPlanned Statement: Statement: Collection methods:Most zooplankton collections were made with a 160 cm diameter, 750 cm length, 1 mm mesh net designed by Omori (1965), with a modified large cod-end (5-litre PVC cylinder). The net was towed for 10 to 15 min through subsurface water (Most specimens of krill used in this study were collected with a rectangular net (3x3 m mouth, 5.6 mm mesh aperture) fitted with an opening-closing cod-end (Foxton, 1963). The net was towed horizontally at depths in which swarms of krill had been located with an acoustic fish finder (general range: 20 to 50 m depth). Tows were made during both day and night. Additional tows were also made with an Omori design net, which had no cod-end modification.Omori M (1965) A 160-cm opening-closing plankton net. J. oceanogr. Soc. Mem. Fac. Fish. Hokkaido Univ. 22, 1-97.The methods used to measure the concentration of dissolved oxygen (the Winkler titration method), the ammonia concentration (the phenol-hypochlorite method) and the inorganic phosphate concentration (the molybdate method) are described in: Strickland JDH and Parsons TR (1972) A practical handbook of seawater analysis. Bull. Fish Res. Board Can. 167, 1-310. Credit Ikeda, Tsutomu, Dr (Principal Investigator) Zooplankton were collected from 15 stations in Antarctic waters, adjacent to Wilkes Land in January 1980. The location, type of net used and the sea surface temperature were recorded for each plankton tow. Water from each sampling site was collected and filtered for use in experiments. Undamaged animals were sorted by species and maintained separately until experiments commenced, usually between 8 ... |
