K-Axis Science Event Log with derived latitude and longitude from underway data

Progress Code: completed Statement: This is a direct transcription of the paper logbook with additional start lat and start lon fields interpolated from ship navigation data, matched on start time/date. There are uncorrected errors in lat/lon/time/sample event code. These will be flagged and correct...

There are uncorrected errors in lat/lon/time/sample event code. These will be flagged and corrected in a quality controlled version of the log. Where there is a large discrepency between start lat/lon and interpolated lat/lon, the latter may be considered to be more accurate. Refer to the eventlog_matchup.html file for details of lat/lon interpolation. Purpose The science event log is a record of the date, time, location, event code (assigned by projects) and if relevant the K-Axis station number where every science sampling event occurred. It is a reference point for scientists to disover what types of data were collected at each location during the voyage for collaboration purposes, and a backbone reference log for ecological studies. Interpolated lat/lon for the start time of each event fill gaps where the position was omitted or overlooked by scientists filling in the log. During the K-Axis marine voyage from mid Jan-late Feb 2016, a diverse range of sampling techniques were employed to collect specimens and data. Each sampling event was recorded by scientists and technical support staff in a logbook that was kept in the operations room on board the Aurora Australis. This is a direct digital transcription of the paper logbook with interpolated lat/lon from underway data to supplement start times as recorded in the log. The method used to obtain the supplementary position is described in the associated eventlog_matchup.html file. event_number: A unique event identifier in the log, in the order that the events were written down (usually but not always chronologically) event_type: The code defined and used by each research project to identify the types of equipment deployed or samples collected for an event. event_type_prefix: A non-mandatory prefix field used by some research projects to identify the type ...
