Description
Summary:Progress Code: completed Statement: In some species the male or female is not described due to no information. All eleven known species are described, there is however little information on these species. This dataset is a compilation of data collected on pelagic nemerteans of the Southern Ocean. The dataset provides a guide for identification of species. Data has been taken from various sources. Each suborder is described, including family characteristics and keys, diagrams, and distribution maps. The orders, tribes, families, and genera descriptions in this guide are taken from Gibson, R. (1982) Nemerteans. In: Synopsis and Classification of Living Organisms. McGraw-Hill Book Company, Inc. New York, ed. S.P. Paker, vol 1, pp 823-846 except where otherwise stated. Special diagnostic characters are mostly from Korotkevitsch, V.S. (1966) Pelagic nemerteans of Antarctic and temperate waters of the Southern hemisphere. Biological Reports of the Soviet Antarctic Expedition (1955-58). Vol 2, pp260-342. The keys have been constructed from information in Gibson (1982) unless otherwise stated. Species occurring in adjacent waters (between 30 degrees south and the Subtropical convergence) are also included in the keys. Distributions are taken from varying sources. Accuracy is dependent on the accuracy of the original sources. The information presented in temporal and spatial coverage is approximate only. This dataset is a document describing the pelagic Nemerteans of the Southern Ocean. It lists the 11 known pelagic Southern Ocean species and with illustrated diagrams provides a guide to their taxonomic identification and distribution. The document is available for download as a pdf from the provided URL.
