Progress Code: completed Statement: This dataset has been validated against that produced for East Antarctica by Fraser et al., 2012 (https://doi.org/10.1175/JCLI-D-10-05032.1). Dataset quality for this dataset is fully described in the associated publication. 2020-10-29 - a minor update was made to the dataset to correct two files (2014 and 2016) that contained minor bugs. Purpose This circum-Antarctic and temporally-contiguous dataset of landfast sea ice extent has many applications in cryospheric, physical, oceanographical, climate, biological, ecological and biogeochemical sciences/studies. This dataset (provided as a series of CF-compatible netcdf file) consists of 432 consecutive maps of Antarctic landfast sea ice, derived from NASA MODIS imagery. There are 24 maps per year, spanning the 18 year period from March 2000 to Feb 2018. The data are provided in a polar stereographic projection with a latitude of true scale at 70 S (i.e., to maintain compatibility with the NSIDC polar stereographic projection).
