Description
Summary:This dataset encompasses moss surface temperatures and physiological parameters of moss species (photosynthetic yield and electron transport rate) in the field and in the laboratory in response to temperature. These data were measured within moss sites at Casey Station, East Antarctica over several field seasons (2003, 2011, 2012 and 2013) supported by AAS Projects 2780, 3129 and 4046; as well as at King George Island, Maritime Antarctica in 2015 and 2019. Data analysis was analysed with support from AAS4516. This Excel file supports the manuscript entitled "It is hot in the sun: Antarctic mosses have high temperature optima for photosynthesis despite cold climate" accepted for publication in Frontiers of Plant Science in July 2020 by Alicia Perera-Castro and co-authors. Data are provided as individual sheets featured in the figures in the Frontiers in Plant Science manuscript as below. "Vocabulary" sheet contains the abbreviations used in the dataset. Please see this sheet for a comprehensive list. These have been summarised in the sheet descriptions below. "1. Field surface temperatures" sheet - contains moss surface temperatures collected in the field during 2003, 2011, 2012 and 2013 field seasons. Data from 2019 field season is currently under embargo so please contact the authors for this data. Site abbreviations: R = Ridges in the moss microtopography V = Valleys in the moss microtopography "Lab functional data" sheet - contains field and laboratory measurements of yield of photosystem II and electron transport rate of moss species in response to temperature. A summary of abbreviations (see the "Vocabulary" sheet for a full list): T_surf = surface temperatures of moss Yield = Yield of Photosystem II ETR = Electron Transport Rate PPFD = Photosynthetic photon flux density
