Description
Summary:This point GIS dataset is comprised of the locations of Antarctic Specially Protected Areas (ASPAs), Antarctic Specially Managed Areas (ASMAs) and Historic Sites and Monuments (HSMs) within or partially within the Australian Antarctic Territory.\r\n\r\nFor the ASPAs and ASMAs represented by polygon data in the dataset described by the metadata record 'Antarctic Specially Protected Areas and Antarctic Specially Managed Areas in the Australian Antarctic Territory - GIS polygon dataset', Entry ID: aspas_asmas_aat, centre points were estimated from the polygon data.\r\n\r\nOtherwise, centre points for ASPAs and ASMAs were obtained from documentation on the Secretariat of the Antarctic Treaty website (http://www.ats.aq/e/ep_protected.htm), except for Haswell Island for which a polygon representing the island described by the metadata record 'Australian Antarctic Territory Coastline 2003', Entry ID: AAT_Coastline_2003, was used.\r\n\r\nWhere an ASPA consists of multiple non-contiguous areas, a single latitude, longitude was estimated for the centre point of the ASPA.\r\n\r\nCentre points representing Historic Sites and Monuments were obtained from documentation on the Secretariat of the Antarctic Treaty website.\r\n\r\nASMA 2 (McMurdo Dry Valleys) is included in this dataset because part of its boundary is in the Australian Antarctic Territory.\r\n\r\nThe data is formatted according to the SCAR Feature catalogue (see Related URL).\r\n\r\nThis data is suitable for small scale use only.
