Report on the archaeological survey in the hilly area of northwest Albania (Lezhë-Shkodër, year 2017)

Sezoni i dytë i vëzhgimit arkeologjik në zonën kodrinore bregdetare të Shqipërisë veriperëndimore, midis qytetit të Lezhës dhe Shkodrës, u krye në periudhën 1-15 tetor 20171. Ashtu siç është përmendur në raportin e sezonit të parë (maj 2014)2, qëllimi kryesor i këtij projekti është identikimi dhe dokumentimi i tumave të ndërtuara vetëm prej materiali guri, të cilat paraqesin një arkitekturë të veçantë të varrezave të tipit tumular të periudhave protohistorike në territorin e Shqipërisë, përgjithësisht e patrajtuar në literaturën arkeologjike shqiptare. Në gjendjen aktuale të kërkimit, kjo arkitekturë duket të ofrojë një aspekt të dukshëm rajonal, e ndeshur vetëm në zonën kodrinore të Shqipërisë veriperëndimore. Deri më tani, atë e kemi hasur në kodrat që ngrihen mbi vijën bregdetare midis Lezhës dhe rrjedhës së poshtme të lumit Bunë. This report presents the results of the second season (1-15 October 2017) of the extensive archeological survey in the coastal hilly region between the lower courses of rivers Drini i Lezhës and Buna, in northwest Albania1. As it has already been mentioned in the report of the rst season (Kurti et al. 2015), the main aim of this survey is the identication and documentation of stone mounds, constructed entirely of loose stones, which very probably are related to burial practices of the late prehistoric periods. The tumuli represent the main burial practice for the Bronze and Iron Ages in Albania. However, all the tumuli excavated so far, from north to south of the country, are constructed in soil, or soil and stones, the latter being mainly used for specic architectural features, such as graves or stone circles and covering. For this reason, the initial information we had on the existence of mounds made entirely of loose stones, in the coastal ridge of Mali i Rrencit, in northwest Albania, seemed promising for initiating an extensive archeological survey in understanding their spatial distribution.
