The contribution of grazing management to the conservation of bird habitats

International audience This paper tackles the questions raised by the conservation of a multipurpose resource: to assess the impact of different grazing regimes on sward structure during spring. Their impact was assessed in relation to the optimal sward structure for nesting lapwing (Vanellus vanell...

Their impact was assessed in relation to the optimal sward structure for nesting lapwing (Vanellus vanellus). Only 6 fields, with winter grazing and heavy grazing in early spring, showed a sward stucture coinciding with lapwing habitat requirements. Taking into account the habitat requirements of nesting lapwings calls attention to the delayed efects of diverse autumn grazing practices.
