Energy consumption and thermal environment of low-energy holiday houses located in Northern Finland

Large part of the energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions are caused by buildings. Concern of global warming, high energy prices and growing dependability of imported energy increase the demand of energy efficient houses. Therefore, a number of definitions for low-energy houses have develope...

Concern of global warming, high energy prices and growing dependability of imported energy increase the demand of energy efficient houses. Therefore, a number of definitions for low-energy houses have developed. The thesis examines low-energy holiday houses, thermal environment in Northern Finland, as well as climate conditions in years 2001-2008. Energy benchmarks of the buildings are done using calculations and a simulation tool. Thesis was conducted as part of a MATKA-program. The goal of the houses was to fulfil the low-energy definitions of Finnish Association of Civil Engineers. The energy consumption of the buildings was compared to the corresponding standard passing houses to see the effect on energy savings. Holiday houses usually include fireplaces; therefore its effect on energy consumption was also examined. The correct use of fireplace can notably reduce the purchased energy consumption of the building. The results implicated that the weather statistics affect the energy consumption. Energy consumption of Passive holiday house and low-energy hotel was notably lower compared to corresponding standard passing houses. The energy consumption varied depending on the calculation method. Passive house does not fully comply with the definitions of Technical Research Centre of Finland, which is stricter than the low-energy definitions of Finnish Association of Civil Engineers. However, the buildings do comply with the low-energy level requirements of adjustment calculations and the low-energy definitions of Finnish Association of Civil Engineers.
