North Greenland Eemian Ice Drilling (NEEM) 2009 S2 Firn Core Density and Permeability

The NEEM (North Greenland Eemian Ice Drilling) 2009 S2 firn core was drilled in order to characterize the physical properties of the NEEM firn. During the 2009 field season, we extracted the NEEM 2009 S2 shallow core from the firn-air sampling site in the clean air sector approximately 2 km away fro...

During the 2009 field season, we extracted the NEEM 2009 S2 shallow core from the firn-air sampling site in the clean air sector approximately 2 km away from the main camp. The NEEM 2009 S2 core was drilled to a depth of 79 m and retrieved in sections approximately 1 m in length and approximately 8 cm in diameter. The core was logged and packed on site, and shipped to the Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory in Hanover, NH, USA for physical property measurements. The core was stored at -29°C at the laboratory. Visual inspection of the firn layering was performed in the laboratory, and firn layering was documented by characterizing each layer on a scale from fine- to coarse-grained based on its average grain size. The firn core was then cut into subsections of 6 to 12 cm in length of homogeneous firn layer type. This dataset includes the permeability ((10 -10 )m 2 ) and density (g per cm 3 ) by depth (m) data for the NEEM 2009 S2 firn core. Gaps in the density and permeability datasets are due to poor sample quality, where reliable density or permeability measurements were not possible.
