This system measures sea ice thickness without the ice observer having to exit the helicopter. The system operates by using low-frequency electromagnetic waves which pass through sea ice and reflect from the ice-sea boundary. The strength of the reflections are then compared to the distance from the sensor to the top of the snow/ice. This yields an accurate estimate of sea ice thickness. Within this resource you will find zipped data set files corresponding to the year that the data was collected along with the metadata describing each data set. Also included are pictures taken in the field showing the Ice Pic system as well as various ice floes. The user manuals for the Hemi and Semi systems are made available as well.
