| Summary: | The possibility of an additional channel of Old World influence into northern North America besides the traditional Bering Strait route has been raised from time to time by such scholars as Frederica de Laguna, Henry B. Collins, Robert F. Heizer and Wendell Oswalt, who saw such influence as originating along the northeast coast of Asia (including the Japanese islands) and traveling thence via the Aleutians. A significant amount of archaeological field work and collecting has been carried out by Japanese workers during the 1930's in the insular portion of the Okhotsk Sea region--the Kurile Islands, southern Sakhalin and Hokkaido. This publication includes all significant Japanese reports on the archaeology of the Kurile (Kuril) Islands except for cases of duplication: e.g. preliminary reports have been omitted when the same author's final report cover the ground adequately. The Archives of Archaeology Series is a 29-volume set jointly published by the University of Wisconsin Press and the Society for American Archaeology on opaque microcards, a now obsolete format. The Mississippi Valley Archaeology Center at the University of Wisconsin—La Crosse has digitized the original opaque microcards and made the digital copies available through tDAR.
