The YK Delta is a region of more than 75,000 km2 of wetlands extending between the Yukon and Kuskokwim Rivers along the coast of the Bering Sea. The local climate is moderated by the Bering Sea, and mean monthly air temperatures range from -14 deg C in midwinter to 10 deg C in midsummer. The study site is located in the active floodplain portion of the delta where tidally influenced sloughs dissect wet sedge and graminoid meadows. The landscape is characterized by low elevations (< 2m) and neutral soil pH. Active sedimentation prevents the accumulation of an organic horizon and no permafrost is present in the active floodplain zone.
