Modeling the southern Chukchi Sea’s response to variations in Bering Sea circulation pathways, 1983-2015

This project was a retrospective study of diapycnal mixing and circulation variations over the northern Bering Sea shelf and how these may be transmitted northward as seasonal or interannual anomalies of freshwater, nutrients, or zooplankton to the southern Chukchi Sea. We developed a new model doma...

We developed a new model domain within the framework of the Regional Ocean Modeling Systeam (ROMS), called the Pan-Arctic ROMS (PAROMS), which extends the ROMS model to include a quadratic ice strength option, landfast ice that is formulated through a basal stress algorithm, and the incorporation of river discharges as a lateral momentum flux having both thermal and haline tracer properties. The PAROMS model was developed using the following data sets: three-hourly winds and other atmospheric variables from NASA's MERRA reanalysis, and boundary conditions from global ocean reanalyses (SODA and HYCOM, depending on year). This model outputs hindcast monthly mean files for 1983-2015 in NetCDF format (.nc). These files are available without limitations, but due the the number and size of the files please contact Axiom Data Science (metadata@axiomdatascience.com) for access. All outputs have the same structure. An example of the file structure, created with ncdump, can be found in the arctic2_2014_12.dump file archived in the "Data" folder of this project. As of July, 2017, code for the PAROMS model has been archived at the following publicly-available repository: https://github.com/kshedstrom/roms This dataset was generated under NPRB project 1302.
