Spines on diatoms: Do copepods care?1

Calanus finmarchicus was allowed to feed on two forms of the diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii ( =T. fluviatilis ): normal cells, which are spinose, and cells which did not have spines. Filtration rates of Calanus on the spinose form were on average 1.7 times higher than on cells with no spines.
