The relative abundance of every taxon was determined by counting 400 valves from each of the Nitella samples. The species composition of the diatom assemblages seemed unchanged throughout the year. A clear seasonal periodicity in relative abundance could not be proved for any of the diatoms in spite of a variation in the irradiance from about 8–10 cal.cm ‐2 day ‐1 in June‐July to 0.1–0.2 cal.cm ‐2 day ‐1 in February. The diatoms were living on a yearly PAR‐irradiance of only 1000 cal.cm ‐2 year ‐1 , which is 2.2% of that at the lake surface. The seasonal fluctuations in C0 2 and pH in 11.25 m subsurface depth are shown by diagrams. Diatom inferred pH is compared with measured pH.
