ABSTRACT A detailed study of topographical maps of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago shows a generalized confusion in the use of geographical terms applied to coastal and sea features. The author exposes this situation, giving many examples of terms having nothing in common with reality, and suggests a study of the global problem for a reasonable and logical use of geographical terms in the Arctic Archipelago. After a round‐up of the past efforts throughout the world to specify the meaning of the terms discussed, he proposes the appointment of an international committee to carry out the task of establishing clear definitions, the publication of a dictionary on coastal and oceanographic features, and the correction of all misused terms.
