Old‐growth forests as objects in complex spatialities

This article discusses complex spatialities utilising concepts developed in the discipline of science, technology and society (STS). With the help of an empirical case, Karelian old‐growth forests, I argue that territorial regions are object‐like things. The concepts of STS can be utilised when studying fixed territorial regions. The existence of old‐growth forests as defined territories depends on materiality and mobility in regional space, stable relations in network space, adaptability in fluid space and various absent‐presences in fire space. I also draw conclusions on the spatiality of transnational environmental governance.
