Mackenzie and Carex capillaris L., from the flora of Teesdale were grown under controlled conditions and their rates of photosynthesis, photorespiration and transpiration were measured in an open gas‐analysis system over the leaf temperature range 5 to 30 °C over a range of irradiances. The maximum rates and the temperature optima for photosynthesis were similar for all the species. The rates of photosynthesis at low temperature and the light saturation characteristics of C. ericetorum and E. latifolium were significantly different from those of K. simpliciuscula and C. capillaris.
