Summary:A bstract In the top of the pug mill, in the region where the relatively air‐free press cakes are being churned and compacted, carbonic acid gas is substituted by displacement for the small amount of air which usually becomes entrapped. Visible gas blebs in the pug are eliminated or minimized, drying losses are greatly reduced, and the integrity of the product is improved. Methods of testing, visual and quantitative, are described to develop and indicate the presence of gases in the pugged clay. The results are illustrated.
