Description
Summary:Moderate infections with the coccidian Epieimeria anguillae , were found in the intestinal epithelium of European eels, Anguilla anguilla , from one estuarine and two freshwater localities. The morphology and epicellular position of the schizogonous and macrogameto‐gonous stages of the present specimens of E. anguillae confirmed the original, and only previous, description. Sporogonous stages were intracellular. Fully‐developed oocysts ruptured their host cells and compressed neighbouring cells, but no erosion of the mucosal epithelium was seen. The results are discussed in relation to previous studies of E. anguillae and to the threat to farmed eels from a source of infection in wild eels.
