Abstract Current web‐based information management systems (IMS) offer a wide variety of tools for a team to work with in a virtual environment. When choosing such a system, users should envision possible tools required and supplemental processes to develop effective communication architectures. This paper discusses the approach that the Polar Night team used during a 9‐month proposal preparation phase to develop a virtual team from ten geographically diverse/distributed organizations, and the lessons learned from combining commercially available IMS to develop an integrated systems engineering application.
