A leading expert in the culture and language of the Inuit as well as of the First Nations of the Pacific Northwest, Boas attained a commanding influence within the emerging discipline of anthropology through his numerous scholarly contributions and the network of his students and associates, including Ruth Benedict, Melville Herskovits, Zora Neale Hurston, Margaret Mead, and Edward Sapir.
