A short while ago CBC’S The Journal ran one of their two-part documentaries. This time it was about the fortieth anniversary of confederation. No, that’s right, fortieth. For as everyone in Southeast Bight knows, that thing they had, what was it? a hundred and twenty-one years ago? was only a warm up for the real thing, 1949, when at long last the vicious Canadian wolf dragged poor virginal little Newfoundland into its lair. That was why Bruce Garvie, with all of his serious reportorial skill, was sitting on various outport stages as he contemplated the fishermen, NFB film footage and more Joey Smallwood than even an old Liberal could stomach.
