The application of economics to the control or management of many of the major infections is provided in this volume and these applications offer insights and templates that might be used to explore other diseases. Economics has a role in placing a disease on the policy agenda. It can help in understanding the incentives and motivations of those involved in reporting and containing the spread of disease. It can evaluate and contribute to the design of cost-effective interventions. Economics can show the implications of poor governance structures and weak contracts for the design and application of guidance and regulations.
