Summary: | Abstract The prevalence in Newfoundland is about 10 times greater than in Switzerland (1 in 160,000) and is similar to the prevalence among the Bedouin of Kuwait (1 in 13,500). The modified diagnostic criteria according to Beales et al. (1999) require the presence of 4 of 6 major criteria or 3 of 6 major criteria plus 2 of 11 minor criteria. The Laurence-Moon syndrome (OMIM 245800) is not characterized by obesity or polydactyly. Patients do, however, have spastic paraplegia or ataxia. |
