Abstract Barry Lopez (1945-) was born in Port Chester, New York, and since the late 1960s has made his home in a small town in Oregon. His works, which include Of Wolves and Men (Scribner’s, 1975) and Arctic Dreams (Scribner’s, 1986) have won numerous honors, including an Award in Literature from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, the American Book Award, and the John Burroughs Medal. This selection, part of an essay that first appeared in Wilderness magazine in 1982, narrates a trip the author and a companion made down the Yukon River in east-central Alaska.
