Description
Summary:Abstract Otto Von Kotzebue (1787-1846) accompanied Admiral A. J. Von Krusenstern on his circumnavigation of the world in 1803-1806, and subsequently commanded two other voyages around the world in 1815-1817 and 1823-1826. It was on his second voyage that he explored the northwestern coast of Alaska in 1816 in an unsuccessful attempt to find the “Holy Grail” of arctic exploration-the northwest passage. He named Kotzebue Sound for himself, a large bay 35 miles wide by BO miles long north of the Seward Peninsula in extreme northwestern Alaska.
