International organizations, regional fisheries management authorities (RFMOs), and regional environmental regimes may offer solutions that minimize the risk of potential disputes. The chapter examines two examples of State practice in this regard. First, Portugal has worked with the regional environmental and fishing regimes in the North-east Atlantic to gain protection for some areas on its extended continental shelf. Secondly, Mauritius and the Seychelles provide a model for cooperative development of the resources of the continental shelf beyond 200 nm.
