Summary:Abstract The article analyzes the urban planning and historical aspects of the development of urban areas of the Kola Peninsula. It is shown what caused the urbanization, namely the processes of narrowly directed industrial development. The characteristic features that define the specifics of urban development processes for the settlement system of the Murmansk region are listed. The scheme of territorial planning in the existing system of settlement of the region is proposed. Depending on the size of the locality and its zone of influence, reference centers of various orders are allocated. Support centers perform organizational and comprehensive maintenance of the surrounding area, are economic centers, and are located at a significant distance from each other at the intersection of transport routes. The need for support is shown Northern regions by the state.
