Summary: | Garifuna organizations connections to their countries produced several outcomes. Garifuna groups held transnational forums beginning in the late ’90s to plan how to support their communities abroad. Discussions involved calling for unity among the Garifuna, cultural preservation, and encouraging economic development in their Central American communities, including reparations. The new century Garifuna New York City organizations responded to their human rights and territorial challenges in Central America. Their outreach goes beyond Central America. Garifuna organization exchanges with their Carib descendant communities in St. Vincent islands also increased. Overall, Garifuna groups activism was both in their New York City communities and their homelands. |
