SELENIUM CONTENT OF FORAGES GROWN IN NOVA SCOTIA, NEW BRUNSWICK, AND NEWFOUNDLAND

Forage samples were obtained from most counties in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick and from three areas in Newfoundland. Out of a total of 228 samples only 5 samples contained over 0.10 ppm Se while 209 samples contained less than 0.05 ppm Se and were classified as severely deficient in Se. The few samples that contained adequate Se were generally scattered, and in all cases samples containing 0.05 ppm Se or less were found in the same county or area. It is recommended that all livestock producers in the region should take preventative measures to avoid Se deficiency problems especially where the livestock are fed entirely on locally-grown feeds.
