Emergence of Chironomidae (Diptera) from Char Lake, Resolute Northwest Territories

Quantitative data, using [Formula: see text]-m 2 submerged traps, were obtained on the six common chironomid genera in Char Lake, at latitude 74°56′ N. Emergence of each species was highly synchronized and in 1972 occurred partly or wholly beneath ice. Each species had different emergence distributi...

Emergence of each species was highly synchronized and in 1972 occurred partly or wholly beneath ice. Each species had different emergence distributions compared with depth, with only two species constituting virtually the entire emergence in the deep sediment zone below 15 m, Emergence per square meter was highest in the shallow areas and the bulk of emergence came from the upper third of the lake. Total emergence was 690 individuals m −2 lake surface in 1971, equal to 0.143 g m −3 year −1 or 0,798 kcal m −2 year −1 this is equal to 0.5% of the lake's total energy flow.
