A reconsideration of forms of squid of the genus Illex (Illicinae, Ommastrephidae). II. Sexual dimorphism

Samples of 382 males and 351 females of the ommastrephid squid of the genus Illex from the Mediterranean, and 452 males and 457 females from Newfoundland coastal waters were compared on the basis of selected morphological criteria, based on individuals of comparable size. It is evident that the form characteristic of the Mediterranean (Illex illecebrosus coindetii (Verany, 1837)) demonstrates strongly developed morphometric sexual dimorphism. Such is not the case with the Newfoundland form (Illex illecebrosus illecebrosus (Lesueur, 1821)).
