Description
Summary:Results from a 20-year-old series of exotic Sitka spruce provenance trials in western Newfoundland were analysed. The average performance of the Sitka spruce over nine locations was poor, but some trees grew faster than the native black spruce on three of the sites. A land race may be in the early stages of development. Exploitation of this variation through a selection and breeding program presents an opportunity to increase forest productivity in western Newfoundland.
