Identification of Fungal Encrustation on the Shell of the Snow Crab ( Chionoecetes bairdi )

A black encrustment commonly found on the exoskeleton of snow crabs (Chionoecetes bairdi) from the Gulf of Alaska has been identified as the microfungus Phoma fimeti. It appears unrelated to other described crustacean shell diseases.
