Glacial and Paraglacial Genesis of Conglomeratic Rocks of the Chibougamau Formation (Aphebian), Chibougamau, Quebec

Conglomeratic rocks of the Chibougamau Formation are interpreted as the products of deposition in a glacial and paraglacial environment, in an area of undulating topography at the margin of an extensive Aphebian ice sheet. Mixtiles and graded laminites with dropstones were deposited in a glacial and proglacial lacustrine environment. Intact framework conglomerates, conglomeratic sandstones and massive sandstone units were produced on alluvial fans in a paraglacial environment, predominantly as debris flows. Correlation between the Chibougamau Formation and the Huronian Gowganda Formation of Ontario is consistent with the environmental interpretation of both formations.
