Fine Structure of the Granulosa Lutein Cells of Pregnancy in Carnivora

The ultrastructure of granulosa lutein cells of pregnancy from 10 raccoons ( Procyon lotor ), 8 crabeater seals ( Lobodon carcinophagus ), 3 black bears (Ursus americanus), a palm civet ( Paradoxurus hermaphroditus ) and a dog ( Canis familiaris ) was studied. Fetuses ranged from 10-130 mm crown rum...

Fetuses ranged from 10-130 mm crown rump length (CR) in raccoons, 15-180 mm CR in seals, 150-190 mm CR in bears, H O mm CR in civet and near term in dog. The cells possess abundant smooth endoplasmic reticulum (ER), variable amounts of mitochondria with tubular and lamellar cristae, a small amount of lipid droplets and folded plasma membranes (Figs. 1-5) much as in other steroid-secreting tissues. However, variations in the arrangements of smooth ER, mitochondria, lipid droplets and plasma membranes are observed throughout pregnancy. For example, in the civet plasma membranes have a few folds but they are highly specialized and complexly folded in the seals and raccoons especially near the capillaries (Fig. 3).
