Reassessment of the genus Rhigognostis Zeller, with descriptions of two new and notes on further seven Palaearctic species (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae)
Abstract The genus Rhigognostis Zeller in Staudinger, 1857 (= Caunaca Wallengren, = Subeidophasia Weber) is redescribed. Plutella dalella Stainton [= Plutella senilella Zetterstedt] is designated as type species of Rhigognostis. Palaearetic species of the genus, except the Tibetan R. viatica (Durran...

Summary: | Abstract The genus Rhigognostis Zeller in Staudinger, 1857 (= Caunaca Wallengren, = Subeidophasia Weber) is redescribed. Plutella dalella Stainton [= Plutella senilella Zetterstedt] is designated as type species of Rhigognostis. Palaearetic species of the genus, except the Tibetan R. viatica (Durrant, 1906) COMB.N., are keyed and figured. The N. European distribution of the species is mapped and notes on the ecology are presented for most of the species. Two species are described as new, sibirica from eastern Siberia and kuusamoensis from northern Fennoscandia. The newly validated R. schmaltzella (Zetterstedt) COMB.N. (= immaculicornella (Guenée) SYN.N., = horticola (Tengström) SYN.N., = incarnatella var. norvegicella (Strand) SYN.N.) is redescribed. Lectotypes for Plutella schmaltzella Zetterstedt, P. horticola Tengström and P. bicingulata Zeller (a junior synonym of Rhigognostis annulatella (Curtis)) are designated. Additional species transferred to Rhigognostis are R. wolfschlaegeri (Rebel) COMB.N., R. japonica (Moriuti) COMB.N., R. kovacsi (Gozmany) COMB.N., as well as the Nearctic R. interrupta (Walsingham) COMB.N. and R. poulella (Busch) COMB.N., which are not treated in this paper. Plutella sera Meyrick, included in the genus Caunaca by Moriuti (1977), is provisionally transferred to the genus Leuroperna Clarke as L. sera (Meyrick) COMB.N |
