Chironomidae (Diptera) from the 2nd Fram Expedition (1898-1902) to Arctic North America described by J. J. Kieffer

Abstract The types of chironomids collected by the 2nd Fram Expedition (1898-1902), described by Kieffer (1926) and deposited at the Museum of Zoology, University of Oslo, were reexamined and redescribed. Holtedahlia Kieffer, 1922 is shown to bc a junior synonym of Chironomus Meigen, 1803 with Chironomus brevipalpis (Kieffer, 1926) a new combination for Holtedahlia brevipalpis. One new combination, Smittia nanseni (Kieffer, 1926), is given for Camptocladin nanseni. The following Kieffer names are regarded as nomina dubia: Syndiamesa polaris (incerta sedis), Smittia glacialis (incerta sedis) and Smittia fulvipluma. The type material is badly damaged for Psectrocladius barbatimanus; but this species has been previously examined and recognized by Oliver (1963). A list of other chironomids examined but not determined by Kieffer is given.
