Doncricotopus bicaudatus n.gen., n.sp. (Diptera: Chironomidae, Orthocladiinae) from the Northwest Territories, Canada

Abstract A new genus and species of Orthocladiinae, Doncricotopus bicaudatus, is described in all stages. The imago has hairy eyes and well developed pulvilli. It can be separated from Nanocladius Kieff. by means of nonprotruding eyes and by having more than two acrostichals, from Rheocricotopus Thi...

The imago has hairy eyes and well developed pulvilli. The pupa has thoracic horn and anal macrosetae as in Rheocricotopus, but other details as in Nanocladius. The larvae has a cardinal beard as in Rheocricotopus and simple S I as in Nanocladius. The similarities between Rheocricotopus and Doncricotopus are shown to be based on symplesiomorphies, those between Nanocladius and Doncricotopus on synapomorphies, with Nanocladius forming the sister genus of Doncricotopus.
