Would you be willing to move to Tanzania? Do you have the materials necessary to achieve nuclear fusion lying around the house? Are you prepared to build a chicken coop in the backyard? If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, you are well on your way to accommodating some of the requests that this year's finalists for the Science Books and Films (SB&F) Prizes for Excellence in Science Books are bound to elicit. If not, no need to worry: The books are just as enjoyable to peruse without, say, booking a trip to the International Space Station. The annual SB&F competition, sponsored by AAAS and funded by Subaru, is intended to promote science literacy and to encourage the writing and publishing of high-quality science books for children and young adults. The shortlist below was compiled by a panel of scientists, librarians, and science literary experts from 214 submissions, published between September 2014 and September 2015. Winners in each category will be announced at the upcoming AAAS Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. Can you guess which ones will take home the prize? |
